One of the questions I'm often asked is 'what is the secret to good planning?'
To be fair, planning is quite a science and it is impossible to cover every aspect of good planning in one conversation. What I find helpful is to ask the following 3 questions:
- Have you developed and documented a broad and deep understanding of your market, the market players, the trends, the opportunities and challenges and where value is created (or destroyed?)
- Do you have a clear set of business priorities, a mix of key action areas or strategies that will enable your organisation to focus and address those challenges or opportunities?
- Have you and your team translated those priorities into a formalised set of tasks or projects and given an individual or team responsibility and resources to action them?
If you can answer yes to all of the above, then you already have the secret. If your answer to any of them is no, then you might want to make that particular question a priority for the immediate future.
If you need help with that, then feel free to contact me.
